DO'S & DON'TS....

    

Here is a list of important points to remember at all times. These really could make a difference to your tortoises lives.

 Do:

  1. Monitor temperatures on a regular basis especially throughout the colder months.

  2. Give your tortoise access to outdoors, natural sunlight or UVB heat lamps.

  3. Allow females access to nesting mounds and keep aggressive males separated from females to avoid stress.

  4. Make sure your tortoise enclosures are secure.

  5. Supervise young children when they are around your tortoise.

  6. Use an appropriate substrate for your tortoises (e.g. sand and soil mix)

  7. Bath your tortoise's two or three times a week as it helps to keep them hydrated.

  8. Monitor your tortoise’s growth by recording their calculated weight to length ratio every 2-4 weeks.

  9. Change your UVB lamps every 6-8 months as their quality degrades over time.

  10. Clean your tortoise table / enclosure out every 10-14 days.

  11. Have your tortoise checked for worms / parasites at least twice a year.

  12. Provide fresh clean drinking water on a daily basis.

  13. Hibernate all Mediterranean tortoises unless they are sick.

  14. Feed your tortoise a natural diet comprising of weeds and flowers.

  15. Use a calcium supplement on their food daily.

 

 Don't:

  1. Mix species of tortoises.

  2. Allow other pets into the vicinity of your tortoises.

  3. Drop your tortoise as it can kill it.

  4. Bath your tortoise in hot water, only luke warm water.

  5. Hibernate your tortoises if they are poorly.

  6. Mow your garden until you're sure your tortoises are locked away.

  7. Allow your tortoise to freeze.

  8. Overfeed your tortoises. A slow growth is best.

  9. Overcrowd your tortoises.

  10. Constantly handle your tortoises as they can get stressed.

  11. Leave your tortoise in a damp cold environment.

  12. Prevent a healthy tortoise from hibernating. Hibernation is an important part of their biological process.

  13. Rub oil or drill holes in your tortoises shell.

  14. Keep your tortoise permanently indoors. Allow access to outdoors during warm weather.

  15. Feed your tortoise sugary fruits or cat and dog food.
