about us....

We live in an idyllic village just off the East Coast of Northumberland. We have been keepers of Hermann's tortoises for quite a number of years now. During this time, our love for tortoises has grown to the point where we now have our own collection of Hermann's tortoises. There is myself and my partner Peter. Between us, we put a lot of time into caring for our tortoises, ensuring that their every need is catered for. Over the years, we have spent an endless amount of time researching tortoise literature, speaking to people on forums and communicating with breeders. Most of our guidance and knowledge has come from the Tortoise Trust as they are the UK's number one tortoise organisation.

All of our tortoises are Mediterranean Testudo hermanni (western and eastern) of which reside at our home address where we can monitor them 24 hours a day. Security is our first and foremost priority for all of our torts and as such, their accommodation is alarmed to the house. Our tortoises have customised outdoor accommodation as well as indoor tortoise tables. During the colder months, the hatchlings accommodation  is offered by means of an indoor tortoise table (when not hibernating).  When it's warmer during the summer months, they go outdoors where they get to benefit from the natural elements. The adults live outdoors all year round apart from when they are in hibernation.

All of our torts are fed a natural weed diet supplemented with Nutrobal and limestone flour. Fresh weeds are picked on a daily basis when we go for walks and are washed during preparation. The provision of heat and light is supplied by Powersun UVB bulbs. We also use ceramic and tubular heaters for any additional background heat. To reduce the risk of over-stressing our torts, we have split them into small groups. All of our tortoises are wormed twice a year and have regular check ups at the vets. Routine monitoring checks are also carried out to ensure our torts are growing and developing healthily.

Owning tortoises has been a learning curve and will continue to do so for many more years to come. I don't think you can ever know it all. We wanted to create this website so that we could provide readers with accurate, informative advice about the care for Mediterranean tortoises. Our primary concern is for the well being of tortoises. As such, we think it's equally important to be able to offer increased awareness to those who cannot obtain it locally. There are still plenty of pet shops and garden centres out there that want to sell you a tortoise with all the wrong equipment. Usually, due to the lack of knowledge and experience, they also end up giving you either none or wrong advice. This is why we feel increased awareness will help to combat against this kind of commercial activity. In our opinion, every little helps!

Anyone who requires any help or advice is welcome to contact us as we are only happy to help. Thank you for taking time out to read this page, and we hope you find the rest of our website helpful.
